If you've never had your home ventilation system professionally cleaned, you might have some questions or concerns about the process. Please read below to learn more about how I do my job. I promise to leave your home cleaner than when I arrived.
For starters, I own the most powerful vacuum truck in central Illinois. I had this truck custom made to my specifications in Canada with a compressor built in Quincy, IL. The compressor is capable of creating 17,500 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of suction. The portable units a lot of my competitors use in central Illinois are only capable of creating 5,000 CFM. The difference is absolutely noticeable.
Before I arrive at your house, I ask that you clear away any obstructions to the vents and air returns in your home. I also ask that you purchase a new air filter that I'll install after I'm done cleaning your system. I would recommend picking up a filter with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating of at least 7 or 8. You'll see it on the package.
My first task after arriving at your home is doing a walk through. This allows me to count the vents in your home, determine the plan to best clean your ventilation system, and explain to you what to expect. After the walk through I will put down carpet and corner protection where my large hoses are placed. Next, I will drill a small pilot hole and then snip a larger entrance into your ductwork where I can attach my vacuum hose (see the picture above). I like to snip my way into duct work as opposed to drilling or sawing because it means you don't have to worry about little metal shards everywhere. After the hole is cut, I will place hard foam blocks over your air conditioning coils to protect them during cleaning and to help create the negative pressure necessary to clean your system.
After I've protected your air conditioning coil I hook my vacuum hose up and turn my truck on. At this point, I walk around your house and cover all of your vents and air returns with pre-cut magnetic strips. This helps create the negative pressure I need in the system to adequately clean your ductwork.
Now that your ventilation system is under negative pressure and is being sucked out to my truck, I use numerous cleaning attachments and work my way through your system. A lot of these attachments are long brushes with spinning heads that dislodge dirt and grime in your vents, which is then sucked out of your house forever. With the tools at my disposal, I will scrub nearly every square inch of your ventilation system.
I've recently started using a brand new tool called the Spider Whip. You can see it in action on my videos page. The Spider Whip attachment scrubs lodged in dirt and dust off of your ductwork and then air sweeps it away. With your system under negative pressure, the dirt and grime is then transported to my truck.

After I've made my way through your system, I'll clean out your blower and vacuum and clean off your air conditioning coil. After that, I'll power the truck down, make sure all of your vents are back in place, close up any holes made in your ventilation with custom closures and HVAC foil tape, and clean up after myself. You'll be left with a home far cleaner than when I arrived. The best part (besides a healthier home that most often smells cleaner) is that none of my tools or equipment require any power from you.
